Reinstate the Heritage and Autonomy of Abbotsford's Indigenous Daughters

The Issue

As sisters of White Abbotsford, we draw upon the legacy of our pre-historian ancestors, steadfast women who lived with bravery, sagacity, and resilience. Our strength springs from Alaha, the sacred force that once guided them and now guides us. This heritage, this connection with our past is not only intrinsic to our identity but also our right, granted by the doctrines of sovereignty and equity.

The doctrine of sovereignty recognizes our inherent privilege to govern ourselves autonomously, a right that allows us to preserve and strengthen our cultural identity. Additionally, the doctrine of equity upholds the call for justice, fairness, and equality for all, no matter the gender or heritage.

Abbotsford, BC, Canada: a place we are proud to call home. However, we feel a disconnect. Our cultural and historical richness is not fully acknowledged or celebrated in our community. According to Statistics Canada, more than 1,500 indigenous people reside in Abbotsford, composing 2.1% of the total city population (Statistics Canada, 2016). Yet, our heritage and voice are often overlooked in popular narratives.

We aim to advance the appreciation of our traditions, the recognition of our ancestors, and the preservation of our rights to autonomy and equity. We seek your solidarity to help us reclaim our identity, justice, and heritage and thus continue the journey our brave ancestors began. Please, sign this petition, become one with us in this noble mission.
