Reinstate the free NYC/NJ museum pass program for Hawthorne Librabry
The Issue
Additional info:
- Yes, library is aware that I started this. They encourage us to get enough signatures to go back to the board.
- It was discontinued in 2018 due to the lack of participation. There is a cost associated with program, and they felt like not enough people were checking out the passes.
- They are willing to bring it back if there’s enough interest. Our best guess is that this isn’t really about a lack of interest, but a lack of overall awareness of this program and hoping that this petition will help our town residents aware of this program.
I've moved into Hawthorne community over 15 years ago and have always been proud to call Hawthorne my home where I am raising my family. Yet, I've recently found myself envious of surrounding towns whose libraries offer the NYC/NJ museum pass program. Our town deserves this opportunity too; it benefits not just individuals, but the community as a whole.
As a parent of three young children, I am passionate about fostering a love for learning and exploration in them. Museums offer an unparalleled educational experience, presenting knowledge in a fun and engaging way. Having access to the FREE museum pass through the Hawthorne Library would open doors to a vast world of culture, history, and art, ensuring that our kids — and future generations — grow up enriched with experiences that they would otherwise miss out on.
It’s about more than access to museums; it’s about childhood development, community pride, and educational equity. Offering free museum passes through our library would level the playing field for families who may not otherwise afford such outings. According to the Institute of Museum and Library Services, museum visits can increase a child’s learning by 15% - a tangible difference in their educational journey.
Let’s not get left behind! While our neighboring communities thrive on culture and connectivity, we too should offer our residents this invaluable chance. By reinstating this program, which was discontinued in 2018, we can enhance our community reputation, provide educational opportunities to our youth, and support the growth of our town.
I urge the library's board and relevant stakeholders to reconsider their current stance and bring back this program for the benefit of all Hawthorne residents. Please join me in petitioning for the revival of the free NYC/NJ museum pass program by signing below. Together, we can make a difference!
