Reinstate the Ditmars Blvd bus stop for Q69 MTA route at Crescent St. & 24th St
The Issue
Hello everyone. I’m reaching out to you today to share a pressing issue impacting not just myself but our entire community here in Astoria, Queens. Last June, our valuable and perfectly positioned bus stop for the Q69 MTA route along Ditmars Blvd at Crescent St. and 24th St. was abruptly moved over two blocks away, landing at 26th St. in the Elmhurst direction and even further at 27th St. toward Queens Plaza.
When you suffer from a condition like mine, with deteriorating cartilage in both knees and impending surgeries for replacements, such changes make a substantial impact. I am not alone in this struggle; my neighbors, including those living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), are also significantly affected. This new bus stop location lacks shelter or seating—critical needs for disabled persons. The old location was not only convenient but also a hub, servicing a high school and several local businesses.
The present setup offers real challenges: safety concerns transpire for those navigating these remote and ill-equipped spots. The area now branded a no man's land instead of a bustling neighborhood fixture like its predecessor. The original stop fostered a sense of community and supported local foot traffic, benefitting nearby businesses and ensuring our students' safe transit.
It’s crucial to remember that the availability of public seating and shelter is more than a convenience—it's an essential infrastructure for vulnerable community members striving for independence.
We respectfully urge the MTA to undo this move and return our bus stop to its original location on Ditmars Blvd at Crescent St. and 24th St. The past year has clearly demonstrated that this change does not serve community members' best interests, especially for those needing reliable and accessible public transportation due to disability. Prompt action will help restore and preserve our neighborhood's vibrancy and ensure a secure, comfortable transportation option for all residents once more.
