As a member of the Massachusetts student-athlete community, it is disheartening to see that the annual Boys and Girls Individual and Doubles Varsity Tennis Tournament has not been reinstated since its suspension during the Covid-19 pandemic. This tournament has traditionally been an event that student athletes look forward to, offering them an opportunity to showcase their skills, compete at a high level, and create lasting memories. 

The absence of this tournament means that some students will graduate without ever having had the chance to participate in this significant event. It's not just about tennis; it's about tradition, camaraderie, competition, and personal growth opportunities that are being missed.

We urge The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) to reinstate the Boys' and Girls' Individual and Doubles Varsity Tennis Tournament for Spring 2024. Let us bring back this cherished tradition for our student athletes who have already lost so much due to circumstances beyond their control.

We understand that there may be other factors contributing to the failure to restart this event.  The MIAA has reorganized how it seeds and organizes the standard Team Championship, and this new formula may complicate how best to design the seeding and format of the Individual/Doubles competitions.  We believe that the positive experiences associated with this Tournament however outweigh these concerns.  We should not let the idea of a “Perfect” tournament stop us from having a tournament.  It will never be “perfect”.  Let’s just get it restarted.  “Good” is good enough for now, and you can learn from this year to improve it in coming years.
