Reinstate the 2nd Cancer Care Nurse Position in Central West QLD

The issue

Queensland Health, Access to robust healthcare services is a fundamental right, yet many rural and remote regions in Central West Queensland, Australia, face significant challenges in receiving adequate care. As a resident deeply affected by this disparity, I have witnessed firsthand the dire need for comprehensive cancer care nursing services in our region.

Imagine the heartache of battling cancer without immediate access to critical nursing support. Over the past years, our community relied on two dedicated cancer care nurses to navigate the strenuous path of treatment and recovery. However, the reduction to a single nurse has left many cancer patients feeling isolated and underserved.

Cancer care nurses are not only vital for administering treatments but also provide the emotional and psychological support that is crucial for patients and their families during such trying times. They are a lifeline, bridging the gap between urban healthcare facilities and rural patients.

Statistics reveal that rural cancer patients are 20% more likely to die within five years of diagnosis compared to their urban counterparts. This disturbing statistic underscores the importance of full staffing. With only one nurse available, many patients must wait longer for care, traveling great distances or relying on overburdened local resources, often delaying crucial interventions.

Reinstating the second cancer care nurse position not only addresses the patient-to-nurse ratio but significantly impacts the quality and promptness of care. It ensures that residents here do not feel neglected simply because of their geographical location.

Central West Queensland deserves efficient and equal access to cancer care. Our community is resilient, but we cannot endure unnecessary suffering due to preventable staffing reductions. We urgently call upon Queensland Health to prioritize and reinstate the second cancer care nurse position.

Sign this petition to demand justice and equity for cancer patients in Central West Queensland. Let's champion quality healthcare for all, irrespective of where they live.
