When I first participated in Jasper Place High School's bikeathon, I was met with a real challenge that pushed my limits both physically and mentally. It was a grueling 24-hour event, a test of endurance and determination, embodying the true spirit of what a bikeathon should be. Now, the school administration has decided to reduce this traditional challenge to just 16 hours, eliminating the overnight aspect that made it truly formidable and unique.

The essence of our bikeathon was rooted in its 24-hour format. By cutting 8 crucial hours and excluding the overnight biking, not only is the challenge diminished, but the whole purpose of testing our dedication and endurance is lost. The whole point of a bikeathon being difficult and overnight was to push us beyond our comfort zones, teach resilience, and build a stronger community spirit among participants.

Furthermore, we are fundraising to be participating for 24 hours. Cutting the time but not the donation amount needed to attend is unfair to students.

There are many students and alumni who cherish the memories made during the overnight rides: stories shared, friendships formed, and invaluable lessons learned. The overnight hours were special because amidst the fatigue, we found camaraderie and support for one another. Removing this experience is like stripping away the heart of the bikeathon tradition.

We understand that logistics can be challenging, but it’s not impossible. With adequate supervision and safety measures in place, the 24-hour event was conducted smoothly in the past. We urge the school administration to reconsider their decision and find ways to ensure the continuity of this important tradition while ensuring the safety of all participants.

We call on Jasper Place High School to listen to the voices of their students and the community. Please reinstate the 24-hour format of our cherished bikeathon, so that future generations can experience the challenge and rewards of this incredible event.
