This is a petition to reinstate the 2024 ASHA convention in Dallas, Texas. ASHA recently decided to pull its 2024 convention out of Dallas, Texas due to “discriminatory legislation”. While we believe ASHA should advocate for all communities in need of speech-language pathology or audiology services, their reasoning for moving the 2024 convention from Dallas does nothing to advocate for the actual needs of our profession. Taking a political stance and making a political statement is unfair, as not all members agree with this decision, and this is not a political organization. While some members of the ASHA board may PERSONALLY disagree with legislation in Texas, ASHA is meant/designed to represent ALL members and the speech, language, hearing, and communication issues pertaining to the field. Requiring members to pay ASHA dues and then taking a public stance on an issue gives the impression that ASHA as a whole, including its members, feel that way about the trend/issue. However, ASHA’s reasoning to move the convention does NOT support ALL members despite their claims to the contrary. Let’s band together and let our voices be heard!
