As a student with a long-term health condition and dyslexia, I am personally impacted by the absence of a fair process for managing extenuating circumstances at Plymouth University. I am not alone in this struggle, many students with learning disabilities and long-term conditions are inhibited by the same challenge. We are advocating for these necessary changes to facilitate an inclusive, fair, and supportive educational environment, particularly for the neurodiverse student community.

We urge Plymouth University to reinstate the 10-Day Extenuating Circumstances Procedure providing ample time and support for students to address unforeseen circumstances without sabotaging their academic performance. This reinstation would align with practices in other UK universities and colleges and cater to the needs of students with learning differences.

Notably, statistics reveal that as many as 1 in 5 students in the UK have specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia (National Union of Students, 2019). A holistic approach to their needs is vital to ensure they have an equal chance of success in their studies.
