Reinstate Thaipusam as a Public Holiday in Singapore
Reinstate Thaipusam as a Public Holiday in Singapore
The Issue
As a devout member of the Singapore Hindu community, I am deeply invested in preserving and respecting our cultural traditions. Thaipusam, a significant Hindu festival held in honor of Lord Murugan, is a vibrant celebration that reinforces the values of humility, prayer, and sacrifice. In the 1950s and 1960s, this festival was recognized as a public holiday in Singapore. Its removal has deeply impacted our community, creating a lack of space for public acknowledgement and celebration of our faith. Following PM Lawrence’s 2024 National Day Rally on the progress of Malay and Chinese communities, it feels timely to reflect on the evolution and recognition of our own community. We kindly and respectfully request the Hindu Endowment Board consider the reinstatement of Thaipusam as a public holiday. Our plea comes from a place of respect for our faith and for the historical tradition that has shaped our community in Singapore. By reinstating Thaipusam as a public holiday, our community will continue to enrich the diverse cultural tapestry of Singapore, promoting mutual understanding and respect among all its citizens. Please sign this petition to support the reinstatement of Thaipusam as a public holiday.
