Reinstate student attendance at Irving High School events

Reinstate student attendance at Irving High School events
The Issue
Irving High School staff has unjustly punished a close friend of mine by banning him from attending senior events and sentencing him to a month of in-school suspension in the SRC after he admitted to drinking alcohol before school. This unfortunate incident arose during a time of personal loss for him, as his grandfather, who had always been his primary caregiver, had passed away just days before.
In a moment of vulnerability and needing support, he confided in a teacher, seeking help to navigate his challenging situation. It is crucial to highlight that by the time he admitted to drinking alcohol, he was not under the influence; he responsibly approached his teacher and demonstrated accountability for his actions after the very light effects wore off. Despite passing a sobriety test administered by officer, his confession for needing help were overlooked by the school staff and they sent him to ISS immediately. Not only was his request for help ignored, but the staff also failed to communicate this situation to his school counselor, who could have provided the necessary emotional and academic support. Most of his teachers were unaware until he arrived at school three weeks later to speak with his counselor himself about the situation and attempt plead his case to administration.
Instead of receiving compassion and assistance, he was met with harsh punishment from the AP. He is now missing out on pivotal senior experiences that he, his friends, and I deeply wish to partake in together. Denying him access to these events is not only a disproportionate response but also an added burden in a time of grief that could be better addressed with understanding and intervention.
We are calling on Irving High School staff and administrators to reassess this decision. Our request is to allow him to participate in senior events and offer the guidance he originally sought when he self-reported. This course of action aligns with educational principles that promote rehabilitation over punitive measures and nurture students' well-being and growth.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more empathetic and supportive response from our educational institutions. Let us stand together to ensure that no student feels isolated and that their genuine calls for help are met with the care and attention they deserve. Please sign to help our friend regain his rightful place in our school's community and to attend the events that will mark the culmination of our collective high school journey.
