The Issue

I am a resident of Winnipeg, struggling with ADHD and mental health issues. For me, and many others like me, snow days provide a much-needed respite - a chance to breathe and take care of ourselves. Moreover, I and several other people I know have to walk to school in the harsh cold. Some are even allergic to the cold which makes it not just uncomfortable but dangerous for them.

Winnipeg has been experiencing very cold winters over the years. These extreme conditions pose serious risks - from frostbite to hypothermia - especially for those who have no choice but to brave the elements.

Snow days used to be a safety measure against these dangers. Especially from how dangerous it has become to drive on Winnipeg roads. However, they've been phased out over time without considering their importance or impact on people's lives.

We urge the Premier, local authorities, and school boards in Winnipeg MB, Canada, not only to consider reinstating snow days but also to develop comprehensive policies that prioritize student safety and mental health during severe weather conditions.

I hope to have 10000 signatures by mid-2025, 2026 at the latest. There must be something done as soon as possible. Please sign and share this petition if you believe that everyone deserves safe access to education without compromising their health or well-being.

”Reinstate snow days and hire active or retired police in our schools for crime prevention. With a direct line to the child abuse unit, police might "caution" a suspect, "saying this has come up, there's smoke here, basically we are aware of this," Black said.

Since paranoid ideations can lead to violence under the DSM-5, delusional disorders ensure suspects, such as predatory teachers, will be considered a danger to themselves and others in the interim, without harming reputations or police undercover operations. Through restorative justice, we can facilitate ongoing medical treatment before retributive punishment.

Police protecting students on campus + Safety and Health policy protecting students off campus + WRHA officer in administration + forensic psychiatrist who specializes in domestic violence and sexual aggression + increased cameras and guards = safest schools in Canada.” -K. Friesen
