The Issue

Reverend Scott Adams has become like family to me and many of my peers at California Lutheran University (CLU). As a black woman, the support Reverend Scott offers is invaluable. In a landscape where support for the black community is scant, his presence has been a beacon of hope and encouragement. Unlike some staff and faculty, Reverend Scott genuinely shows up, shows out, and showers us with love and support. This nurturing presence is something many of us, especially in the black community, desperately need.

It’s baffling that CLU has chosen to let go or remove the position of Chaplain of Athletics held by Reverend Scott Adams, while allowing a racist, misogynistic, and prejudiced professor to remain for over 30 years. This disparity is glaring and deeply troubling. Not only has he been the Reverend and Chaplain of athletics but he’s also a professor for philosophy. Scott Adams has been more than just a philosophy professor, he is someone who genuinely changes the atmosphere of every classroom he walks into. The way he teaches makes students feel seen, heard, and valued. He does not lecture at us or make us feel small; instead, he speaks with us, creating conversations where everyone feels like they can think deeply, ask questions, and grow together. His classroom lights up in a way that is hard to explain unless you have experienced it yourself. He reminds us that education is not just about memorizing information, but about connection, understanding, and learning from one another as peers. As a Black man, educator, mentor, and role model, Rev. Scott carries himself with wisdom, compassion, and authenticity that inspires so many students both inside and outside the classroom. He is the epitome of what an amazing educator should be, and the impact he has on students will last far beyond college. Reverend Scott has tirelessly worked to better the lives of countless students. His influence transcends typical pastoral duties; he provides emotional, spiritual, and social support that is rare but crucial in an academic setting.

Reverend Scott Adams has played an integral role in improving student well-being and fostering an inclusive atmosphere at CLU. His continued presence is vital for maintaining a supportive environment where students feel valued and accepted, particularly those from marginalized communities. His removal not only hinders this progressive environment but actively regresses the support system we have so critically depended on.

I urge CLU to reconsider this decision and reinstate Reverend Scott Adams also known as the Chaplain of Athletics as a Professor. By doing so, you affirm your commitment to diversity, equality, and student welfare. It’s time to make decisions that reflect the values of inclusion and respect that CLU should stand for.

Please join me in calling for Reverend Scott Adams' reinstatement. Sign this petition to let your voice be heard and show CLU that we support Reverend Scott's invaluable contributions.
