The Issue

Principal Jason Norred is the embodiment of BrewTech's spirit and serves his school daily with a true servants heart. Since his introduction to our school, Mr. Norred has poured his heart and soul into making BrewTech a thriving educational institution. Every day, his committed presence and dedicated leadership inspire us as students, faculty, and the broader community. He serves our school with a servant's heart and unparalleled pride, making him not just our principal, but our community's backbone.

Under Mr. Norred's leadership, BrewTech has achieved remarkable academic excellence, with proficiency scores well above the national averages in both reading and math. Under his guidance, BrewTech was the first school in Alabama to earn Cognia certification and has now earned the prestigious honor of being recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School.  BrewTech has also been recognized as a model school by Magnet Schools of America. These accomplishments reflect not only the hard work and dedication of the students and teachers, but the pivotal role Mr. Norred has played in driving our community’s success.

The decision to remove Mr. Norred is both unexpected and baseless. His departure would not only affect the academic performance of our school but would also diminish the strong sense of community and support that he has nurtured. Mr. Norred can be seen daily walking the halls of our school and greeting students. He uplifts students in everything that he does. Each day under his leadership, we are taught respect, cooperation, and  kindness through demonstration. The impact of losing such a vital leader would be felt deeply by all of us--especially as upcoming seniors. The rapport and community that he has built over the years is truly irreplaceable.

We urge the decision-makers to reconsider and reverse their decision to remove Mr. Norred. We ask for transparency and justifications for this abrupt action, understanding that effective leadership should be celebrated, not penalized. Let BrewTech continue to flourish under the trusted and proven guidance of Mr. Norred. This action is harmful to our faculty, staff, parents, and most especially our student body. When policymakers should have the best interest of our students in mind, this is a failure of their civic responsibility.

Join us in rallying behind our beloved principal. Sign the petition to show your support for Mr. Jason Norred remaining the principal of Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School and help us keep BrewTech moving forward in excellence and unity.

I voted “No” on the principal shuffling, and for the most part, that vote centered around the transfer of Jason Norred. I had lengthy conversations with both Jason and our superintendent and listened carefully to the rationale from each. From an emotional standpoint, I could understand the difficult position our superintendent was in and the reasoning behind the decision. Leadership often requires making tough choices that are not always easy to explain or accept. At the same time, I also understood exactly where Jason was coming from because I have walked that road myself. In 2012, after building the Psychology Program into nine full classes and serving as Department Head, I was transferred to a middle school to teach Geography—a subject I had only taken in the 8th grade. It was my 30th year in education, the same year I was nominated for the Golden Apple Award, which, to this day, I never received despite 44 years in education. At the time, it was heartbreaking. Yet I firmly believe God allows things to happen for a reason, even when we cannot see the purpose in the moment. Looking back, that transfer opened doors I never imagined. It ultimately led to the opportunity to serve three terms on the Board of Education, open my second real estate company, teach for 12 years at South University, and spend seven years at Success Unlimited Academy. While my vote was heartfelt and reflected my support for keeping Jason Norred where he was, I also recognize that many leadership moves, though painful, are sometimes necessary for the greater good. Time often reveals what we cannot see in the moment. I sincerely wish Jason Norred and all of the principals affected by these transitions the very best. May each of them find new opportunities, new successes, and doors opening that they never expected. Sometimes the most difficult chapters become the very ones that prepare us for our greatest blessings. Dr. Lesa Keith
