Too many times have I been victim to a burst grocery bag, my items spilling onto Rhode Island streets. Like many others in my community, I have come to realize the weakness of our brown paper bags. They rip far too easily, causing inconvenience and messy clean-ups. Our plea is simple: bring back the sturdy plastic bags and put an end to the use of brown paper bags. We don't ask this out of ignorance to environmental concerns, but rather, consider this an appeal for quality and practicality. Plastic bags can carry nearly 50% more items than paper bags, reducing the number we need for our shopping drastically. Additionally, reusing plastic bags only extends their usefulness, and can spare many from ending up in a landfill. It is time we voice our opinions to find a better, stronger alternative to the brown paper bags currently in use.
