The Issue

For many of us in Huber Heights, Ohio, obtaining a driver's license at 18 has long been a right of passage. For over a century, individuals aged 18 and over have not been required to attend driver's school. This approach has allowed many young adults to enter adulthood with the independence that comes with having a driver's license without the burden of unnecessary courses.

Yet, recent changes to the law now mandate driver's school for those aged 18 to 21, adding a new hurdle. It's frustrating that something as straightforward as getting a driver's license has become a source of income for driver's schools rather than focusing on actually equipping us with better driving skills. Clearly, this policy shift is more about making money than truly improving road safety.

Realities show that the statistics do not support the necessity of this requirement. Studies have consistently shown that the age of licensing makes little difference in the number of accidents; rather, driving experience and personal responsibility play a greater role in driving safety. This regulatory change feels unnecessary and financially exploitative at a time when many young adults are already facing financial challenges.

Reinstating the previous policy would alleviate these burdens and allow young adults to save both time and money—resources better spent on education or building a career. It’s time to question why such a costly burden is placed on young adults without clear evidence of its benefit.

Urge local lawmakers to reverse this law and to consider what truly serves the community’s interest. Sign the petition to bring back the policy of no driver's school requirement for adults aged 18 and over. Together, we can make a stand for fairness and financial relief for every young aspiring driver in our community.
