The Issue
I am a resident of Portage, IN, and like many others, I struggle with getting enough sleep. Despite trying my best to manage my time, early school start times and other commitments make it impossible for me to get the recommended amount of sleep. This is not just my problem; it's a widespread issue affecting many students across our community.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers should sleep 8-10 hours per night on a regular basis to promote optimal health. However, due to early school start times and heavy workload, most students are unable to meet this requirement. The lack of adequate sleep can lead to various health problems such as obesity, diabetes, poor mental health, and decreased academic performance.
Reinstating nap time in schools could be an effective solution. A study by the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that midday napping in schools can help make up for insufficient nighttime sleep among adolescents.
It's high time we prioritize student health over outdated routines. By reinstating nap time in schools in Portage IN., we can ensure our students are healthier and more focused on their studies.
