The Issue

In Spokane, WA, the West Valley High School community is facing an unfortunate and concerning situation that calls for immediate attention and action. Mr. Mastronardi, a beloved educator known for his dedication and positive impact on students, is unjustly facing termination over a misunderstanding involving a text from the classic novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird."

The incident that has put Mr. Mastronardi's career at risk involved him reading a passage from "To Kill a Mockingbird," a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, which is part of the approved curriculum for freshman students. The passage in question contained historically accurate language, including a racial slur, which has been a topic of educational discussion regarding the portrayal of the past and the evolution of societal norms.

A student, holding a video recording device, captured this reading—a segment required by the school's literature program. The video was subsequently shared beyond the classroom, reaching various recipients inside and outside of West Valley High. Unfortunately, some individuals have misinterpreted the context of the reading, leading to a significant misunderstanding and, consequently, the administration's decision to let go of Mr. Mastronardi.

This decision strikes at the heart of educational integrity and the role educators play in exposing students to important historical contexts that foster critical thinking. Mr. Mastronardi is not alone; countless students and parents stand by him, recognizing his commitment to education and the constructive discussions he facilitates.

We urge the administrative body of West Valley High School and the wider Spokane education authorities to reconsider this course of action. Not only is this decision detrimental to a well-regarded teacher's career, but it also diminishes the richness of the educational experience provided to students by limiting exposure to important, albeit challenging, literature.

Sign this petition to call on decision-makers to reinstate Mr. Mastronardi to his rightful place in our classrooms. Let's uphold the integrity of educational discourse and ensure that a valuable educator is not punished unfairly for fulfilling his educational duties. Together, we can ensure that Spokane’s youth continue to receive a comprehensive and thoughtful education that embraces complex but necessary historical discussions.
