Reinstate John Constantine’s Bisexuality

The Issue

As a Change.org user deeply invested in the accurate representation of sexual orientations in pop culture, I find the recent erasure of John Constantine's bisexuality in DC Comics disheartening and hurtful. John Constantine, a character who has been openly bisexual since 1992, embodies the diversity within the LGBT community. His representation of bisexuality in men plays a critical role in increasing the visibility of bisexuality as a whole. This portrayal is crucial given that more than half of the LGBT community identifies as bisexual.

Unfortunately, the recent narrative changes to Constantine's character by Si Spurrier have not only erased a key part of Constantine's identity, but also fueled misconceptions about bisexuality. Spurrier's biphobic claims, citing bisexuality as "non-inclusive of trans or nonbinary people," harm not only the bisexual community but also trans and nonbinary individuals, many of whom identify as bisexual themselves or have bisexual partners.

We believe that narratives and representations matter. It is essential to remember that bisexual individuals have always been at the forefront of exploring and expressing the diversity of human desire and connection beyond gender and sex. Thus, portraying bisexuality as binary or transphobic not only misrepresents a marginalized group but also breeds discrimination based on misinformed perspectives.

We urge DC Comics and Si Spurrier to recognize their role in perpetuating biphobia, to reinstate John Constantine's original sexual orientation, and to offer an unconditional apology to the bisexual and transgender communities for their harmful actions. We believe it's time to stop erasing bisexuality and to start celebrating the diverse identities that come together to form our society. Please stand with us in demanding representation and respect for all members of the LGBTQ community. Sign the petition.
