As a member of the RIMSD#41 community, and student at Rock Island high School, I have witnessed the disruption caused by the recent schedule change from half days on Fridays to Thursdays. This shift was made under the assumption that it would improve student attendance by reducing the temptation to skip. However, this well-intentioned adjustment has primarily resulted in logistical challenges for students and teachers alike.

Half days on Fridays were a cornerstone of our schedule, providing a much-needed break at the end of the week for both students and educators. The change to Thursdays interrupts the flow of the school week and places undue pressure on students who are required to adapt their learning to an offbeat schedule. Instead of preventing absenteeism, it merely shifts the problem without addressing its root cause.

Research supports that a consistent schedule positively influences student performance. With half days on Fridays, students could decompress after a full week, retaining information and preparing mentally for the next week. Teachers also benefitted, having more time to plan their lessons for the coming days.

Furthermore, many families have calibrated their work schedules around the Friday half-day structure. The sudden change to Thursdays has caused planning difficulties among household routines, transportation, and extracurricular activities, leading to stress and confusion not only for students but for parents and guardians as well.

Let's bring back the beloved half-day Fridays. This schedule makes sense for everyone involved, fostering a healthier school environment and boosting morale. We deserve a system that acknowledges the needs of its community and addresses attendance issues with thoughtful, data-driven solutions.
