Reinstate Gender Identity in UI Non-Discrimination Policy

Reinstate Gender Identity in UI Non-Discrimination Policy
The Issue
When the University of Iowa (UI) removed “gender identity” from its nondiscrimination statement sent out on September 9, 2025, it sent a powerful, negative message to students and staff alike: you don’t belong here if you don’t fit the binary norms. This decision not only contradicts the values of inclusion and diversity that educational institutions should uphold but also potentially sanctions discrimination against those who identify as nonbinary, transgender, or gender-nonconforming.
This is more than a mere policy change; it's a stark erosion of our rights and protections on campus. It comes on the heels of other disheartening changes: the elimination of gender identity fields from application materials, the disbanding of the living-learning community designated for LGBTQIA+ individuals in university dorms, and statewide rollbacks on civil rights protections for transgender individuals in Iowa. Such actions blatantly disregard the needs and rights of a significant portion of the campus community.
As a diverse body of students, staff, and faculty, we demand gender justice and equal rights at our university. This starts with acknowledging and restoring “gender identity” into the non-discrimination policy. Such a measure not only assures all current and future students that they will be supported and treated fairly during their time at UI but also signifies a commitment by the university to foster a truly inclusive and supportive environment.
The ripple effects of removing this terminology are vast and deeply personal to many. Discrimination thrives when protections are stripped away, leading to a hostile and divisive campus atmosphere. This change affects the mental health, safety, and academic performance of those it targets. We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to these consequences.
We urge the University of Iowa to reinstate “gender identity” in its non-discrimination policy without delay. Let us set a precedent for equality, respect, and dignity for all members of our community. Join us in this call to action to safeguard the rights and identities of everyone on campus. Sign this petition and stand in solidarity with every marginalized voice affected by this decision. We can make a difference, but only with your support.
