The Issue

With the alarming increase in rear-end hit-and-run incidents, it's no longer just a statistic for me—it's personal. Without front license plates on vehicles in Alberta, rear dash cameras are rendered almost useless, and perpetrators escape accountability. Identifying offenders becomes highly challenging, leaving victims without justice and encouraging repeat offenses.

Alberta is a unique province in Canada, where only rear license plates are required. However, other provinces mandate front license plates, and they have witnessed a noticeable difference in preventing and solving hit-and-run cases. Front license plates offer an easy and effective solution to enhance road safety by allowing vehicle identification from both ends.

In many cases, rear dash cams capture the act, but without a front license plate, they fail to capture the vehicle's identity. This loophole provides an easy escape for offenders. The lack of a front license plate makes it exponentially harder to track down the offending vehicle, leading to a higher probability of unsolved hit-and-run cases. With front plates, victims can swiftly report the perpetrators, leading to quicker resolutions and a potential decrease in such incidents.

Beyond just hit-and-runs, front license plates could help in various law enforcement activities, such as locating stolen vehicles and enforcing parking regulations. It’s a simple yet powerful tool that could profoundly change our safety landscape.

Alberta should prioritize the safety of its citizens by reinstating the mandate for front license plates. This initiative could be crucial in preventing future crimes and ensuring safer roads for everyone.

Join me in urging the government to reconsider the importance of front license plates. Let's make our roads safer for all. Sign this petition to bring back front license plates in Alberta.
