The Issue

The call to reinstate forms of corporal punishment in the UK emerges from the growing frustration with an overburdened prison system that is unable to fulfill its fundamental functions. Today, our prisons are overcrowded beyond capacity, leading to the premature release of criminals who have not completed their sentences. This situation is far from just or safe, as it exposes society to repeat offenders and dilutes the very essence of justice.

Within the walls of these overcrowded prisons, corruption festers. Drug use is rampant, and hardened criminals exert dangerous influence over short-term inmates, coercing them into committing further crimes upon their release. This toxic environment undermines any efforts at rehabilitation, with alarming statistics showing that nearly 50% of prisoners reoffend after release.

The current trajectory aims to address these issues by building more prisons, but this proposal could siphon off taxpayer money with little promise of reducing reoffending rates. On average, it costs over £60,000 to house a single prisoner annually—an expenses burden that could instead be channelled into resources to support victims of crime and community safety measures. (The average annual income in the UK is less than £40,000).

Reinstating corporal punishment for some crimes, as opposed to issuing prison sentences,  could serve as a powerful deterrent as well as reducing the likelihood that first offenders progress into more serious crime.

The nature of the punishment would be determined by a panel of experts in the fields of psychology, neuroscience and may not always result in  physical measures but could include other hardships such as the removal of assets.

The moral debate around corporal punishment is complex. However, it's essential to weigh the cost of inaction more heavily. The current system's failure places countless lives at risk every day, and the continued overcrowding threatens to break an already strained prison infrastructure as well as generating and ever increasing financial burden that our country cannot sustain.
