Reinstate Floss St Bridge artwork that was removed by Sydney Metro
The issue
This petition calls for Sydney Metro to reinstate the original Floss St Bridge artwork and if it has been destroyed/lost to work with community to deliver a new additional artwork
Last year, Sydney Metro closed the Floss St Bridge for the installation of the anti throw screens. During this shutdown they removed an artwork installed in 2011 meant to celebrate the next 100 years, containing artworks of local children of what they believed the future to look like.
Once removed, Sydney Metro repainted the wall and installed 2 large advertisement screens.
I reached out to Sydney Metro in October of 2025, inquiring as to how and why this has happened and called for the artwork to be reinstated. I received a response 3 months later stating that “removal was not specifically communicated in advance of the work occurring” and that “there are no plans to install any new public artwork in this location.”
Sydney Metro further stated that they “recognise the importance of public art in elevating the public transport experience and enhancing the quality and character of our stations and public plazas. New artwork has been installed within the station concourse as part of the conversion to Metro.”
One artwork should not be able to replaced for another.
The Friends of Erskineville group successfully lobbied TfNSW to remove unwanted billboards on a similar brick wall where there was previously nothing. If TfNSW are able to remove ad screens from a wall that had nothing on it, then ad screens should be able to removed for the reinstallation of public art.
Council are aware of this issue and share the sentiment but it is not within their remit as the bridge is owned by Sydney Metro. Jo Haylen, the MP for Summer Hill has written to John Graham, the Minister for Transport to raise this issue in which hopefully a desirable outcome will be achieved.
