When I entered the film studies program at TMU, I was looking forward to learning about each discipline involved in making films, but was most excited to learn more about editing. However, in recent years, the Creative Editing elective has been cancelled and is no longer offered, leaving the mandatory first-year introductory editing course as the only remaining editing class. On top of that, this introductory course is being converted from a lab to a lecture, meaning that there is no longer any hands-on learning offered for an extremely hands-on practice.

I find this odd because there is at least one elective offered for every other main discipline (e.g. directing, cinematography, screenwriting, sound design), and for many other less popular disciplines as well (e.g. visual effects, scenography, coding), but none for editing, a discipline which is arguably one of the most important when creating a film. I have spoken to other students who are also perplexed at the lack of editing courses in the program, and there are enough of us to prove that the removal of this class is not due to a lack of interest on the students' behalf. 

With this petition, I hope to prove to the administrators at TMU Image Arts that reinstating the Creative Editing elective, and even adding additional levels to the course for different years of study, would benefit not only students who wish to pursue editing as a career, but also those in the program who simply want to learn more about editing and improve their skills in a wider range of disciplines.
