The Issue

We, the undersigned, are passionate fans and longtime supporters of the Perfect Dark franchise. We are deeply disappointed by recent news suggesting the reboot of Perfect Dark—a game that has been in development for several years—has been quietly shelved or cancelled.

Perfect Dark is not just another first-person shooter. It is a cornerstone of gaming history, a cult classic that introduced innovative gameplay, deep storytelling, and a strong female protagonist in Joanna Dark—long before it became common in the industry. The 2020 announcement of a reboot sparked excitement across the gaming world, signaling a bold return for a franchise that deserved a modern reimagining.

Millions of fans waited patiently through the development cycle, encouraged by early trailers and developer updates. The involvement of The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics only raised expectations, as did the promises of a narrative-rich, next-gen espionage experience. To let the project die in silence after years of investment—both from the studios and the fanbase—is a disservice to the legacy of Perfect Dark and to the community that has stood by it for over two decades.

We understand that game development is complex, especially in today's industry landscape. But transparency and fan trust matter. Abandoning a beloved IP without clear communication risks alienating a loyal audience and undermining the credibility of the studios involved.

We respectfully urge Xbox Game Studios and its partners to:

1. Provide an official statement regarding the current status of the Perfect Dark reboot.

2. Reevaluate the decision to cancel or pause the project and explore ways to continue its development.

3. Engage with the community to understand how important this title is and what it represents for the future of Xbox exclusives.

The world is beyond ready for Joanna Dark’s return. Please don’t let this iconic hero fade into obscurity.

Sincerely,

Luc Curtis
