The Issue

As a rising senior at the University of North Georgia (UNG), I find myself in a predicament I should never have faced – homelessness. A crucial reason for this is the recent change in UNG's housing system to a lottery, eradicating the former credit hour system which ensured priority housing for seniors and upperclassmen. The new system, seemingly a roll of the dice, is causing undue distress and uncertainty among the student body.

Off-campus housing is not only more expensive, but it also increases our carbon-footprint due to commuting. Gas costs being another burden, a concern especially potent given the ongoing climate crisis, hints at irrationality of this lottery system.

Many among us are out-of-state or distant students, for whom commuting is simply not feasible. The previous method of housing allocation, the credit hour system, honored the service and commitment students had given to UNG. This meaningful system has been replaced by randomness, a lottery toss that has tarnished the seniority and dedication of upperclassmen.

We urge the UNG authorities to heed the outcry of students and reinstate the credit hour housing system or at least work towards creating additional housing options. It's about equity, justice, and the tribute we accord to hard work and commitment. Stand with us in restoring the old system and fostering equality at UNG. Sign this petition to demand justice for upperclassmen left without housing, justice for the UNG student body, and justice for future students.
