Reinstate Coursera's Full Financial Aid for Committed Learners

Reinstate Coursera's Full Financial Aid for Committed Learners
The Issue
Like many talented students around the world, Kirollus is a dedicated medical student in a developing country who relies on Coursera to develop vital skills in public health—enabling him to improve healthcare access in underserved communities through his aspirations of becoming a neurosurgeon-scientist. However, the recent 90% cap on Coursera's financial aid now prevents Kirollus and countless other students from completing their certifications due to the remaining aggregate costs to meaningfully learn through the platform, despite demonstrating commitment over many years.
If Coursera does not grant exceptions for exceptional cases, talented learners like Kirollus will be deprived of opportunities to apply their skills to causes of social good. For example, the underserved patient populations Kirollus strives to benefit may lose out on important medical advances and outcomes if he isn't equipped beyond traditional education to benefit them. Coursera risks limiting the worldwide impact and societal benefits of motivated learners who face financial barriers outside their control.
Now is the time for Coursera, and other OpenEd platforms, to reconsider rigid one-size-fits-all policies that can inadvertently hinder learners' potential. By evaluating financial aid appeals individually and reinstating full support in compelling circumstances, Coursera can reinforce its pioneering role in expanding educational access for all. Urgent action is needed to ensure committed learners dedicated to creating positive global change, like Kirollus, can achieve their ambitions through open learning—advancing Coursera's mission globally.
