Reinstate Contracts for All Teachers of Color in Lynn, MA

The Issue

We, the concerned community of Lynn, MA, are deeply disturbed at the non-renewal of the contract for the advisor for Black Student Union at Lynn English High School. This esteemed educator has dedicated countless hours to nurturing the potential of our students, particularly among the Black community. His labor has not gone unnoticed and he is beloved by his students. The impact of his loss will be far-reaching and detrimental to the progress made toward empowering students of color in Massachusetts.

Regrettably, this isn't an isolated occurrence. Nationwide, approximately 20% of public school teachers are individuals of color, compared to over 50% of public school students, demonstrating the evident underrepresentation (source: National Center for Education Statistics). Lynn, a diverse town, should prioritize, not diminish, the presence of educators of color.

Educational research has shown that having teachers of color can help students of color achieve better outcomes in school and feel more connected and supported (source: Learning Policy Institute). Yet, despite these benefits, contracts for teachers of color in our town are not being renewed. The gains these teachers have brought to our community are in jeopardy if we do not take a stand.

It is essential to rectify this issue. Therefore, this petition calls on the Lynn School District to renew the contracts of all teachers of color. Stand in solidarity with us by signing this petition today, because every signature pushes us further towards sustaining diversity in our teaching force and ensuring our students have access to valuable role models who reflect their own experiences and identities.
