Reinstate Christmas Eve Holiday for UMN Employees and Staff

Reinstate Christmas Eve Holiday for UMN Employees and Staff
The Issue
The University of Minnesota (UMN) has historically recognized Christmas Eve as a floating holiday as a means to provide employees with time for celebration and connection within our family and community. However, the upcoming 2026-2027 fiscal year no longer recognizes Christmas Eve as a holiday. This decision overlooks the value and importance that this day holds, not just for those who observe it as a religious holiday, but for countless families who value this day as a time for family and personal reflection.
This decision has far-reaching impacts on the UMN community, particularly for clinical employees and others deemed essential. These dedicated individuals are responsible for the safety and smooth operation of the University, often working tirelessly to provide patient care. Yet, under the new schedule, only a limited number of employees will be granted time off on
Christmas Eve as it is no longer a university holiday, which is unfair and deeply affects their ability to spend quality time with their loved ones.
I urge the University of Minnesota administration to reinstate Christmas Eve as a recognized holiday, thus realigning with the inclusive spirit that our community prides itself on. By doing so, UMN will ensure that it remains a place where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of how they choose to celebrate. Furthermore, adjusting the holiday schedule in this manner shows compassion and respect for the personal and religious beliefs of the faculty and staff. It's a step toward maintaining a harmonious work environment and respecting the cultural
significance of Christmas Eve. Universities across the nation, like the University of Michigan and University of Wisconsin, have maintained similar observances to much appreciation, showing that this request is both reasonable and feasible.
Please join me in signing this petition to restore Christmas Eve as a holiday at the University of Minnesota. Together, we can advocate for a more inclusive and understanding holiday schedule
that respects all members of our community. Your support in signing this petition is crucial to restoring Christmas Eve to its rightful place on the university's holiday schedule. Thank you for
your support.
