When I was a student at Fruitland High School, some of my fondest memories were made on the cheerleading team. It was more than just an extracurricular activity; it was a community where I built lifelong friendships, learned the value of teamwork, and developed my self-confidence. Fruitland Middle School students should get this opportunity in their school as well. However, due to an incident involving students over a decade ago, administration chose to disband this program, stripping current students of the opportunity to experience these same benefits.

The actions of a few should not dictate the future of our children. Cheerleading provides numerous benefits that extend beyond the athletic aspect of the sport. It encourages physical fitness, instills discipline, and fosters school spirit. For many students, it serves as a critical social avenue, helping them to integrate and thrive in their school environment. Studies have shown that extracurricular activities correlate with improved academic performance and emotional well-being.

Fruitland Middle School has grown and changed significantly in the past 13 years. The current administration has proven to be capable and supportive of various student initiatives. This transformation presents the perfect opportunity to reassess and reinstate the cheerleading program with updated guidelines to ensure safety and inclusivity.

By bringing cheerleading back, we not only restore a beloved tradition but also provide our students with a valuable platform for personal growth. Let us not allow past mistakes to overshadow the potential for future successes.
