Reinstate "Bodies Are Cool" book in Merrick UFSD's Safety Lesson

The Issue

As a concerned resident and community member of Merrick, I strongly feel that our community should represent a place of respect, inclusivity, and openness. Recently, the Merrick Union Free School District (UFSD) removed the book "Bodies Are Cool" from a lesson on the dignity aspect of safety— an action that contradicts the very lessons of dignity and respect that we should be imparting on our students.

The decision to remove this book signals an underlying issue we must address. It suggests that our district does not fully appreciate the dignity of all humans, especially those who may appear or feel different from us. The book serves as a tool to put people at ease, both physically and emotionally, aiding in creating a safer and more accepting environment for all. The removal of this book, in essence, supports bigotry and exclusion which is far from the values our community stands for.

Unfortunately, a minority of close-minded Merrick residents were able to convince the board and superintendent that this book is not permissible.  A small group of loud misinformed people should not be allowed to dictate the curriculum in our schools.

In a country like the United States, where approximately 26% of adults live with some type of disability (CDC, 2019), it is critical to educate our students about diversity and acceptance. Removing resources such as "Bodies Are Cool" highlights the lack of such much-needed education.

Let's come together as a community and request the Merrick UFSD to reconsider their decision. Reinstate "Bodies Are Cool" in our district's safety lesson to ensure that we cultivate a safe, inclusive, and respectful atmosphere in our schools and beyond. Sign this petition and stand for the dignity and respect of all people.
