In our small community, the excitement of softball is more than just a sport. It is a gathering of friends, family, and a beloved coach who inspired our children both on and off the field. Recently, a decision was made to ban our cherished coach and family from participating in local softball activities. This decision has pushed them out of our cherished environment, forcing them to find a new location to continue playing, and the impact is profound.

Coach Drew Moser has been a positive influence in the lives of many young athletes. By fostering teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience, their mentorship extended beyond the game. For years, the coach has created an environment of trust and camaraderie. Now, with their removal, these bonds are at risk of eroding.

The decision to replace not only the coach but also to relocate them to an unfamiliar field affects more than just the adults who make these decisions. Our children are losing the stability and consistency they rely on for building friendships and life skills. The disruption has left many feeling unsettled and divided, right when the sense of community and belonging is needed most for their development.

Research has shown that mentors like coaches can have a significant impact on youth development. According to a study, mentoring on the field is directly linked to improved academic performance, better emotional health, and the reduction of risky behavior in adolescence. Our community should not be deprived of these benefits due to unjust removals and relocations.

We understand that actions may have stemmed from concerns that should be addressed, but removing a mentor who has done an outstanding job throughout the years is not the solution. Instead, we propose a transparent discussion with all stakeholders, including parents, community members, and the local sports authority, to address issues and bring Coach Drew and his family back to our field.
