The Issue

In the heart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a controversy that could have been avoided hadunfolded over the naming of the new 8th Avenue Bridge. Initially celebrated as the 'Arc of Justice,' the name was removed without public discourse or official explanation by the city government, and many of us residents are angry and disappointed. A name laden with symbolism and respect, it signified a commitment to fairness and justice across all ethnic backgrounds in our diverse community.

As a resident deeply entrenched in the spirit of equity for all, I find it perplexing and disheartening that our city would succumb to potential pressures opposing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles. The exclusion of public notice or input, and the subsequent silent removal of such a meaningful name mirrors an alarming trend of dismissal of community values and could be viewed as bowing to dictatorial tendencies, lacking transparency and progressiveness.

We believe that the sudden removal is linked to anti-DEI legislation influences; however, there is nothing unlawful about the bridge being called 'Arc of Justice.' The robust message of unity and justice that the name carries is crucial now more than ever. Moreover, in maintaining fairness, if the bridge isn't named 'Arc of Justice,' then it's only justifiable to dismantle other ethnic symbolic representations like the 'Welcome to Czech Village' and 'Welcome to NewBoCo' bridge signs, as they do not represent the multitude of ethnic backgrounds in our city.

As a community, it is imperative we retain names of honor and fairness. This is not merely about a bridge; it's about standing firm against injustice, preserving our civic identity, and ensuring that all ethnicities feel represented and respected. Let's implore the city of Cedar Rapids to rectify this decision, by reinstating 'Arc of Justice' as the official name of the 8th Avenue Bridge.

Please stand with us in solidarity for equity, unity, and justice in Cedar Rapids. Sign and share this petition to demand city officials honor their duty to represent all citizens equitably and prevent the erosion of our community's diverse identity. Together, let’s hold our governing bodies accountable and foster an inclusive environment for all.
