The Issue

The University of California, Berkeley has long been a leader in promoting health, wellness, and a sense of community among its employees and staff. A core component of this effort has been the WorkFit program, which has enabled countless staff members to maintain their physical fitness, mental well-being, and sense of belonging within the university. The success of this program is evident in the multitude of testimonials from staff who have benefited immensely, both personally and professionally, from the array of fitness classes offered.

Recently, however, there have been sweeping cuts to the WorkFit program, drastically reducing its capacity at a time when the need for such wellness resources is greater than ever. Guaranteed to be fully funded until the end of the fiscal year [2025-2026], it is unconscionable that this essential program, with its rich array of in-person classes, virtual Zoom sessions, and an extensive on-demand library, is facing such diminishment. This is not only a disservice to staff and faculty, but it also runs counter to the university’s commitment to fostering a supportive and sustainable work environment.

Investing in wellness programs like WorkFit is proven to enhance employee productivity, job satisfaction, and overall health, leading to a more engaged and effective workforce. The cuts also undermine years of collaborative effort that have gone into growing this program and engaging a broad spectrum of participants across the university community world wide.

We urgently call upon the Executive Leadership of the Recreation and Wellbeing department at UC Berkeley to reinstate the WorkFit program to its full capacity immediately. This includes restoring in-person classes, maintaining virtual Zoom classes, and continuing the on-demand library. We also ask that the department preserve the robust infrastructure that the former WorkFit Manager put in place, ensuring the program’s long‑term efficiency and sustainability. Moreover, we advocate not only for the preservation of WorkFit but for its expansion—adding new classes and extending its reach so that a greater number of UC Berkeley community members can benefit for many years to come.

Join us in our efforts to protect and enhance this vital resource for the staff and faculty at UC Berkeley, ensuring it continues to serve those whose health and community spirit it nourishes. Sign this petition to make sure that the invaluable benefits of WorkFit are preserved and expanded for the good of all concerned.
