The Issue

Michelle Reid is not just an Animal Control Officer for Alpena County; she is a passionate advocate for animals who performs her duties with dedication and heart. Her efforts have given hope to countless lost and needy pets, providing them with someone who genuinely fights for their well-being.

Michelle has been instrumental in numerous lost animal searches, tirelessly spending her time and resources to ensure that each animal finds a safe home. Her personal commitment to each case and her relentless pursuit of justice for animals in distress set her apart as an exceptional officer who truly cares about her community.

Despite her exemplary service, Michelle Reid has recently been removed from her position without any transparent explanation. This decision not only affects her personally but leaves a gap in the community's efforts to protect and care for animals. Our pets and stray animals depend on having dedicated officers like Michelle to intervene and help them in vulnerable times.

Alpena County needs Michelle Reid reinstated to continue her work in safeguarding the animals that are not just pets, but family members to many citizens. To maintain the high standards of care and response that she has established, it is vital that we voice our support for her immediate reinstatement.

Animal welfare cannot be compromised. We urge the Alpena County decision-makers to right this wrong and restore Michelle Reid to her rightful role where she can continue making a difference.

Please stand with us and sign this petition to bring back Michelle Reid in Alpena County Animal Control, ensuring our animals have the dedicated advocate they deserve.

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your concerns about the recent changes within the Animal Control Officer position. I want to clarify that, although the petition lists multiple county officials, the Sheriff has full authority over hiring and personnel decisions within the Sheriff’s Office, including the Animal Control Officer role. These positions are appointed and can be hired or released at the Sheriff’s discretion. My understanding is that the Sheriff has appointed an assistant to serve as the interim Animal Control Officer while the department determines next steps. The County Commission typically does not get involved in internal staffing decisions made by the Sheriff, and at this time, we do not intend to interfere. We respect the Sheriff’s authority within his department and do not have direct oversight over these personnel choices. That said, I want to emphasize that supporting animal control is deeply important to us—both as a matter of policy and on a personal level. I’m a dog person myself, and I share the community’s concern for the well-being of animals, especially those that may be vulnerable or mistreated. Regardless of staffing changes, Alpena County will continue to ensure that stray dogs are cared for and that animal-related issues are properly policed. Thank you again for raising your concerns. We appreciate how much this matters to residents, and we will continue to support strong and compassionate animal control services in our county. — William LaHaie Alpena County Commissioner, District 1
