Every time I use YouTube, I am increasingly frustrated by the lack of an ad timer. It seems like YouTube is trying to get us more deeply engaged with their numerous advertisements by keeping us in the dark about how long we will have to wait. This small yet significant lack of transparency is not just frustrating but feels a bit sneaky. It's critical for viewers like myself to know how much longer an ad will last. At the very least, YouTube should give us the option to see the remaining time on ads, so we can better plan our viewing habits and enjoyment of content on the platform.

This isn't just a minor inconvenience—it's becoming an increasing annoyance with ad lengths sometimes reaching up to 150 seconds, all while interrupting videos every five minutes. Imagine trying to enjoy a 15-minute video only to be interrupted three times by lengthy ads without knowing how much longer you have to bear them. It seems unreasonable and, frankly, makes the viewing experience on YouTube far less enjoyable.

Data from Social Media Today indicates that YouTube's ad revenues reached billions of dollars, in part due to the massive volume of ads dispersed within the user experience. While advertisement is an essential revenue stream for YouTube, long unskippable ads every few minutes could drive loyal viewers away. Adobe's Digital Video & Ad Report highlighted that more than 60% of users skip ads whenever they get a chance, demonstrating that viewers prefer shorter, more manageable ad experiences.

I'm asking YouTube to consider reinstating a timer for ads, providing users with the basic transparency we deserve. If that's not possible a simple additional button in settings that would allow users to see the time left on a ad would also work. Allow us to manage our viewing time more effectively and enjoy the content without frustration. It's a simple yet effective step that would greatly improve the user experience on one of the most popular video platforms.
