Reinstate Access to Student-Friendly Video Game Sites at Schools

Reinstate Access to Student-Friendly Video Game Sites at Schools
The Issue
One of the highlights about school is the opportunity to relax and bond with friends over enjoyable video games. The camaraderie and joy we discovered in those simple moments of leisure were invaluable in fostering strong friendships and reducing stress, vital for mental health in a demanding academic environment.
Unfortunately, schools have chosen to block access to student-friendly video game sites, namely Hoodamath.com and AZGames.com, the two biggest sights we use. While it is understandable that there are concerns about off-task behavior and distraction, outright blocking access to these sites may not necessarily be the best method to address these issues.
Studies have shown that moderate gaming can actually improve cognitive functions such as problem-solving and strategic thinking. A study in the American Journal of Play (Winter 2014) suggests that video games, when played in moderation, can enhance social skills and decrease anxiety.
Additionally, it is important to note that the use of technology, including video games, is becoming increasingly integrated into teaching methods, representing a shift in how students learn and interact in today's digital age.
We propose an approach that allows for regulated usage of these video game sites during allocated free periods or after school hours, while still maintaining rigorous academic expectations during class periods. It is a balanced solution that respects both the education model and students' leisure time.
We urge you to consider this petition and recognise the positive value these video game sites can bring to our school environment. Please help us reinstate access to student-friendly video game sites in our schools. Sign this petition to support us in this endeavor.
