Reinstate 16-Week Courses at Ivy Tech Community College for Better Education

The Issue

As a student at Ivy Tech Community College, I witness firsthand the effects of the 8-week classes on the quality of education we receive. These classes, reduced from 16 weeks, have led to a decline in our educational experience and the overall learning process. The fast-paced atmosphere of these shortened classes does not offer students ample time to absorb, process, and assimilate the information. Our institution prioritizes these 8-week classes, which, while financially beneficial to the school, do not provide students with a comprehensive and complete education.

Data reveals that critical components and assignments necessary for broad learning have been excised to accommodate an 8-week class structure. Such a rushed approach drastically affects students' retention of taught material. Furthermore, with less than 48 hours between classes, the intense pace sets students up for failure rather than success. Additionally, the feedback received from several Program Chairs and professors echoes dissatisfaction with the 8-week format.

The compromised quality of education from Ivy Tech might hinder the student's academic progress, especially when transferring to four-year schools, resulting in an educational delay compared to other students at similar levels. We believe that returning to 16-week coursework would ensure a more in-depth grasp of academic material, leading to greater student success and achievement.

Preserving the educational quality and standards at Ivy Tech Community College should be paramount. Therefore, we appeal to the relevant authorities to reinstate the 16-week courses and prevent the risk of students receiving an incomplete education. Sign this petition to support the reinstatement of the 16-week classes at Ivy Tech Community College.
