Call for RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to Censure Donald J. Trump

Call for RNC Chairman Reince Priebus to Censure Donald J. Trump
The Issue
Dear Chair of the Republican Nation Committee,
On June 16, 2015, Donald J. Trump declared his candidacy for president. As per usual, Mr. Trump was the braggadocios billionaire, real-estate mogul, reality TV-personality we’ve all, willingly or unwillingly, come to know. Right at the outset, Mr. Trump attacked millions of Mexican-Americans with derogatory remarks. Inasmuch as Mr. Trump has certainly made his fair share of offensive comments during his tenure as a TV-personality, the context of these remarks was not reality TV, it was actual reality. And therefore, in the immediate wake of his speech, I was left stunned.
Over 5 months have passed, and essentially not a single day has gone by without Mr. Trump pouring salt on that open wound. What is more, he has mounted and doubled-down on an insurmountable offensive offensive, and there are few Americans, or peoples on Earth for that matter, which have not been negatively impacted by, at a minimum, the shrapnel of his barrage. Dishearteningly, Mr. Trump’s relentless negative rhetoric has rendered many Americans desensitized, with an indelible incapacity of distinguishing political correctness from respectfulness. Egregious comments made by Mr. Trump, which, if spoken by the typical American in their workplace, would unquestionably result in their immediate termination, paradoxically bolster his campaign and invigorate his supporters.
There has been ample opportunity for Mr. Trump’s fellow republican presidential candidates to denounce his reprehensible remarks and actions. Some public figures have offered small-scale, televised criticisms or have taken to Twitter to air out their grievances in fragmented form. However, no one has demonstrated the ability to erect their spine to publicly decry Mr. Trump on the big stage.
It is time someone took a public stand against Mr. Trump. Mr. Chairman, I felt a civic and moral duty to draft this letter to you, on behalf of the citizens of America, republican and democratic alike, in a call for the Republican National Committee’s public censure of Donald J. Trump. Recently, Speaker of the House, Paul Ryan, publicly denounced Mr. Trump’s recent proposal for banning all Muslims from entering America: ‘This is not conservatism. This is not what the party stands for and, more importantly, it’s not what this Country stands for.’ Mr. Trump’s proposals and policies are inconsistent with conservatism, and therefore it is incumbent on you, as Chairman of the RNC, to publicly dissociate him from your party.
More broadly, with Mr. Trump’s actions effectively sanctioned by the RNC, his peers and his supporters, he has been afforded to run amok under the guise of an anti-politically correct candidate. As a result, Mr. Trump is setting a standard in America that violates our very common core values of decency and respect. The words and actions of Donald J. Trump are outrageous, and are unbecoming of, and incompatible with, a person seeking the highest office of the United States of America. Frankly, his words and actions are un-American and should categorically disqualify him as a candidate for President of the United States of America. That said, it is incumbent on you, as an American political official, to publicly censure Donald J. Trump.
Respectfully,
Martin D. Spranger
