Regulate Vehicle Headlight Brightness for Safer Roads

Regulate Vehicle Headlight Brightness for Safer Roads
The Issue
I, like many others, struggle with an astigmatism in both eyes. This means that driving at night, a task that should be normal and safe, has become increasingly nerve-wracking. The development and increasing use of LED headlights has exacerbated this issue, as these types of headlights often emit light that is excessively bright, dangerously blinding other drivers on the road.
Many others share this problem. A 2016 AAA study found that 64% of Americans feel less safe driving at night due to oncoming headlights, revealing that this is a public safety issue affecting a majority of drivers. Additionally, a National Safety Council report backs up these concerns, revealing that traffic death rates are three times greater at night.
We are not asking for vehicles to go dark, but rather to implement appropriate levels of brightness that respect the physiology of all road users and do not pose unnecessary risks. The brightness of headlights should be regulated to avoid the potentially dangerous glare caused by exceptionally bright LED headlights. By doing so, we can ensure safer, less stressful driving conditions for everyone, regardless of their vision impairments.
We urge lawmakers to consider this matter with utmost importance and ask that they work to implement fair, comprehensive headlight brightness regulations. Please add your signature to this petition and help make driving at night safer for all.
