Regulate Towing Companies Impounding Vehicles Due to Medical Emergencies
The Issue
This is a plea birthed from personal pain and unfairness. Brandon Rassman a state worker Formerly working for the department of military affairs to the environmental cabinet in Kentucky, had a normal routine just like any of us. He would awake and set out for work daily, not aware that one fateful day would alter our lives forever. Merely at 31, while commuting, Brandon suffered a cardiac arrest. He was able to pull his car over before immediate collapse. Tragically, he didn't survive.
While coping with such a grievous loss, we were hit with another blow. His vehicle, which he had managed to park safely, was impounded by a private towing company, entirely unrelated to law enforcement. The company did not reach out to us. Instead, we had to track them down. In the end, they showed no compassion, charging us an exorbitant fee of over $2200 to reclaim his vehicle.
This is an appeal for legislature to stop the exploitation of families hit with medical emergencies or bereavement. Currently, there are no laws protecting the victims of medical emergencies from such heartless acts. The goal is to establish regulations on private towing companies, preventing them from imposing outrageous charges to reclaim vehicles under such circumstances. It's a matter of basic human decency and a step towards a more empathetic society.
We urge lawmakers to acknowledge the unfairness of such practices by private towing companies and make changes. Protect those who are already dealing with the pain of a medical crisis or the devastating blow of a loss or even families whose loved ones survived their medical emergency could you imagine getting out of the hospital and having to pay thousands of dollars to regain your own property just because you had an emergency that was life-threatening .Sign this petition to demand fairness for families like ours.
