Regulate the Use of Social Media for Political Campaigns in Canada

Regulate the Use of Social Media for Political Campaigns in Canada
The Issue
In recent elections, social media platforms have played a significant role in not just endorsing candidates, but also in spreading misinformation and foreign interference. This misuse of such platforms has disrupted fair democratic processes. I, along with countless other concerned Canadians, propose legislation that will redefine the use of social media in political campaigns. We insist that Canadian politics must aim to maintain integrity and transparency by constraining the use of social media for anything other than sharing fact-checked policy and platform information. Furthermore, this legislation must prohibit attack ads and comments on social media posts to curtail unnecessary defamation and misinformation. Globally, countries like France and Germany have already acted against online misinformation (source: 'Combating Fake News: An Agenda for Research and Action', a report from Harvard University's Shorenstein Center). Let us follow suit, ensuring genuine information reaches our voters. We call upon Elections Canada to take a stance against the misuse of social media in political environment. Please, sign this petition to push for a healthier and truer political climate in Canada.
