Regulate the Environmental and Human Impacts of Artificial Intelligence

Regulate the Environmental and Human Impacts of Artificial Intelligence
The Issue
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly being integrated into our daily life with beneficial efficiencies and innovations. However, this advancement comes with significant negative effects to the environment and humans. The consumption of resources in addition to the labor involved raises moral concerns about these AI systems. To ensure a sustainable and equitable future, it is important to implement regulations that address these environmental and human impacts of AI.
As someone who values the innovation and technological advances of today's world, I am concerned about the environmental sustainability and ethics of this new technology. The outstanding amount of energy required for training AI models leads to increased carbon emissions, accelerating climate change. Additionally, the labor practices in AI development creates ethical issues as workers often face exploitation without sufficient protections. These issues align with my values and emphasizes the need for responsible AI development. (news.mit.edu)
The community should also be aware of AI’s environmental impacts and labor implications. The data centers powering AI systems consume large amounts of electricity, often relying on fossil fuels, which contributes to environmental degradation. Large amounts of water are also polluted when used to cool down the servers facilitating these AI models. The polluted water oftentimes is recirculated into the water supplies that we end up drinking from. Additionally, the labor force behind AI, including model trainers, frequently works under precarious conditions, an alarming truth of the workers’ rights and well-being. However, these impacts are not distributed equally. Marginalized communities, including those from “third-world countries,” often suffer the worst from environmental harm and labor exploitation, underscoring issues of the intersectionality of classism with racism and oppression. (cjr.org , unep.org)
To mitigate these challenges, I propose we should engage the stakeholders of these companies to implement energy efficiency in data centers, promote the use of renewable energy sources, and disclose the environmental impact of their AI technologies, like how companies from neighboring industries have done. We should also urge local governments to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, and to address the intersectional impacts of AI. We can start by signing petitions like this and making our voices heard by community leaders to resist this hegemony of industrial capitalism.
Through continued efforts, I hope voices can come together and be heard to get to a future with AI where environmental sustainability and human rights are prioritized with innovation. By implementing these regulations, we can harness the benefits of AI while still minimizing its adverse effect on the planet and society. This approach ensures that technological progress does not come at the expense of environmental integrity or social equity. After all, if we don’t act now, who will be left to question the normality of tomorrow?
