Regulate Reservation of Public Pickleball Courts and Reinstate Open Play
The Issue
Speaking as a passionate pickleball player and a citizen of this beautiful city, the surge in popularity of pickleball in Pittsburgh is bringing in a whole new wave of players who are seeking out the fun and rewards of the sport. Unfortunately, the rise of the sport's fame is being met with practices that sideline the spirit of community and open play.
Our public parks, which should be a place for leisure and free activities for all, are increasingly being monetized. Private groups and individuals are able to reserve the highly sought-after pickleball courts, consequently denying others, particularly those who cannot pay or were not privy to the system, access to these public amenities. The system needs to be reshaped to prioritize the essence of open, communal play once again.
The pickleball player community has long practiced 4-on-4 off rotations, ensuring that everyone in the park can participate without overwhelming the courts. Currently, this method is being overlooked for profit, ultimately impacting the camaraderie and inclusivity that made pickleball such a beloved sport in our community.
Public courts should fulfil their purpose of serving all the public equally without the prospect of profit outweighing the public's need and enjoyment.
This is why we urge the city council to regulate how public pickleball courts can be reserved, promoting tight rotations on courts and reinstating the spirit of open play that has enabled many to enter into and enjoy this rapidly growing sport. The essence of community and open play must not be compromised for profit. Please, sign this petition to help preserve the public essence of pickleball.
