Upon my return to Dominica on May 31st, 2024, amidst the midday sun, a disheartening scene unfolded before us, the arriving passengers. At the ferry terminal, a motorist carelessly blasted explicit lyrics from his stereo, assaulting our ears with profanity: "I don't want to talk, I just want to f*%k." The discomfort on the faces of tourists, accompanied by the uncertainty of how to respond, painted a vivid picture of the degradation that has infiltrated Dominican culture.
Venturing further, I strolled along the promenade, only to be met with the regular occurrence of explicit music polluting the air. Approaching two police officers stationed there, I inquired about their presence, questioning whether they intended to address the dissemination of oral pornography in the vicinity. To my dismay, one officer responded nonchalantly, stating that they were not tasked with such duties, as the music pervades not only the streets but also the airwaves.
It became painfully clear that our administrators have failed to confront this pressing issue, leaving our tourists, children, and the most vulnerable members of society exposed to such vulgarities. As a community, it is incumbent upon us to demand accountability and rectify this situation promptly for the sake of future generations, ensuring a safe, welcoming, and wholesome environment for all who visit our shores.
I extend my gratitude to all who join in this collective effort.
