Kratom, often marketed as a safe and natural remedy, is anything but that for those who become dependent on it. It is a largely unregulated substance that affects the brain's opioid receptors, leading to addiction, psychotic symptoms, and even dangerous interactions when combined with other substances.

Scientific studies support these claims, indicating that kratom can lead to addiction and, in severe cases, cause seizures and even death (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Despite these risks, kratom remains readily available over the counter in many states due to a lack of federal regulation. We are calling for a statewide ban on over-the-counter sales of kratom to protect our citizens from becoming unwitting victims of this harmful substance.

Lawmakers must take immediate action to regulate this supplement and implement measures similar to those taken for other addictive substances. By requiring prescriptions for kratom purchase, we can ensure that it is used responsibly and only under the guidance of a healthcare professional. Additionally, increased public awareness campaigns about kratom's dangers can help inform and protect consumers.
