Over the last few years, I've noticed an alarming increase in the brightness of vehicle headlights. On numerous occasions, both myself and my partner have experienced near blinding incidents while on the road due to overly bright headlights from oncoming traffic. This dangerous issue poses a significant risk not only to us but to countless drivers nationwide.

Blinding headlights can create a split-second situation that disorients drivers, increasing the chances of accidents. According to a study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in the US  many headlights installed on modern vehicles exceed the maximum light levels that are safe for nighttime driving. This creates a hazardous driving environment, contributing to the 40% of car accidents that occur during nighttime despite less vehicular activity compared to daytime hours.

The lack of regulation surrounding headlight brightness in our country means that car manufacturers can, and often do, install lighting that, while technically legal, greatly exceeds safe luminance levels. This poses a risk not only to drivers, but also to pedestrians and cyclists who are temporarily blinded by these lights.

What we need is a uniform, national regulation on the maximum permissible brightness of vehicle headlights. Such regulations already exist in other jurisdictions, including the European Union, which imposes strict limits on the luminosity of headlights. By implementing similar standards, we can ensure that all headlights are designed to maximize safety and minimize risks on the road.

Headlight brightness regulations would enforce more balanced light intensity, promoting improved safety for all road users. Moreover, these regulations could incentivize manufacturers to develop advanced lighting technologies that are both efficient and safe.

Let's take action to demand that national transportation safety authorities introduce comprehensive regulations on headlight brightness. By controlling headlight intensity, we can dramatically reduce blinding incidents, decrease accident rates, and make our roads safer for everyone.
