The Issue
Living in Lebanon, I have witnessed firsthand the alarming rate at which forests and farmlands are being clear-cut to make way for massive subdivisions. This rapid development is not only destroying our natural landscapes but also displacing countless wildlife, including deer herds, that call these forests home. The rate of these developments is spiraling out of control, causing great concern among residents and nature enthusiasts alike.
Currently, the infrastructure in Lebanon is not equipped to handle the surge of newly built homes. The roads are too narrow, leading to traffic congestion and safety hazards. The sewer and water systems, which are possibly already at maximum capacity, are unlikely to support the additional burden of all these new constructions. As our town grows unchecked in this manner, we face significant strain on our infrastructure, discomfort for our residents, and irreversible damage to our environment.
It is crucial for the health, safety, and future sustainability of Lebanon that we implement regulations to manage these developments. The City of Lebanon should conduct thorough impact assessments for each project to evaluate the effect on wildlife and the adequacy of our infrastructure. Zoning laws should be revisited to ensure that new construction does not compromise our community's safety or our environmental responsibilities.
By implementing strict regulations on clear-cutting and imposing limitations on the density of new housing developments, we can ensure that Lebanon grows in a balanced and sustainable manner. It is crucial that we preserve our natural spaces, protect the wildlife that depends on them, and maintain the integrity of our community’s infrastructure.
I urge the City Council of Lebanon to take immediate action to put a halt to indiscriminate clear-cutting and to reassess the infrastructure capacities before approving any new housing projects. We must take responsibility for our community and the environment, ensuring that future generations can enjoy the rich natural beauty and resources of Lebanon.
Please sign this petition to demand that our city leaders ensure responsible development practices that preserve our natural environment and adequately support our community’s infrastructure needs. Your support is vital to bring about the change our community desperately needs.
