I am deeply concerned about the unchecked expansion of AI data centers in our communities. The issues stemming from these centers affect the water I drink, the noise pollutes the natural world that I cherish, and the increased demand for electricity burdens me with higher costs. This technology-driven future need not come at the expense of our environment and quality of life.

AI data centers consume an astounding amount of electricity. In 2020, U.S.-based data centers consumed approximately 2% of the nation's electricity, with AI services contributing a significant portion of this usage. As AI technology continues to advance, this number is expected to rise exponentially. By regulating the amount of electricity AI data centers can use, we can protect our energy resources and prevent surging electricity costs for everyday citizens.

Moreover, these centers have a substantial impact on our water supply. AI data centers require massive amounts of water for cooling purposes, often leading to alarming decreases in local water resources. For instance, Google’s data center in Douglas County, Georgia, used around 1.1 billion gallons of water in 2021. Without adequate regulation, this could spell disaster for communities already facing water scarcity.

Noise pollution is another critical concern. These data centers are operational 24/7, generating continuous noise that disrupts local ecosystems and diminishes the quality of life for nearby residents. This constant hum not only affects humans but disturbs wildlife, impacting breeding and foraging behavior critical to maintaining biodiversity.

To address these issues, I propose that stringent regulations be introduced to control the electricity and water consumption, and noise levels of AI data centers by the Tennessee Public Utilities Commission.  Additionally, let’s ensure that revenues generated from these centers economically benefit all Americans, offsetting the environmental and social costs they impose.
