Your voice continues to make a difference! Fulton County has begun several initiatives aimed at improving the difficult conditions of our county shelter.
You can find more information on the projects below.
Before you proceed, you need to understand that OUR JOB IS NOT DONE. A new shelter facility has not yet been funded. We must stay focused and be loud in order to insure that a new facility, that fits the county needs, gets fully funded and built. Stay tuned for information on opportunities to make your voice heard. With that said, the progress that has been made in the few short months is impressive.
Since this petition came out, the county has:
- Funded and begun renovations of the current facility to address some of the health issues for staff. This includes redoing the HVAC system, addressing the rat infestation, and renovating public spaces in an effort to bring the office space up to standard until the new shelter is built.
- Identified a site and started work on a nearby overflow facility to address overcrowding. The overflow facility will hold somewhere between 70 - 100 dogs and will help the shelter handle the influx of animals. It’s especially timely as a significant uptick in intake usually occurs during summer months as well as holiday months.
- Allocated $250,000 to complete a feasibility study in 2019. The study will cover needs assessment, space recommendation, site evaluation, location selection, conceptual design, and cost estimates for a NEW shelter. The feasibility study is projected to be completed by end of 2019. Next step after that will be working with the private sector and the Fulton County government on funding for a new facility. The goal date for completion of a new facility is the end of 2020.
A large part of the above efforts can be attributed to Alton Adams, Fulton County’s new Deputy Chief Operating Officer for Public Safety. The Fulton County Animal Shelter is one of his many responsibilities, and he is committed to making positive changes. Alton has served on the board at Atlanta Humane Society and has a heart for saving animals! We’re excited about where the partnership between the voters of Fulton County and Alton and his team will lead.
Thank you for your continued support! We will continue to keep you updated and in the loop.
Fosters Needed:
If you are able to foster at this time, the Fulton County Shelter has many dogs (Like Pablo featured in the photo who can't find space on the dog bed) that could use a break from the shelter. Please complete this form and email: foster@fultonanimalservices.com
